Step 1: Choose Your Entry Role
There are three common entry points into the Salesforce ecosystem:
- Salesforce Administrator — Manages configuration, users, automation, and reporting. Best for people coming from business analyst, operations, or support backgrounds. No programming required.
- Salesforce Developer — Builds custom functionality with Apex, LWC, and integrations. Best for people with a programming background or those willing to learn to code.
- Salesforce Consultant — Advises clients on how to implement Salesforce. Best for people with CRM or project management experience who enjoy client-facing work.
For most beginners, start as an Admin. The certification is achievable without a tech background, job demand is high, and it opens doors to Developer and Consultant paths later.
Step 2: Get Certified
Your first target should be the Salesforce Certified Administrator exam. It is the most widely recognised entry-level credential and is required or preferred by most employers for Salesforce-related roles. After passing Admin, platform knowledge makes it much easier to pursue Developer, App Builder, or Consultant certifications next.
Step 3: Build Hands-On Experience
A free Salesforce Developer Edition org is available at developer.salesforce.com. Use it to build real automations, custom objects, and dashboards. Document what you build. Recruiters look for evidence of practical skills, not just a certification badge.
Step 4: Use the Trailblazer Community
The Salesforce Trailblazer Community (trailhead.salesforce.com) is free and invaluable. Complete Trailhead badges, join local user groups, and participate in forums. Community visibility often leads directly to job opportunities and referrals.
Step 5: Apply and Interview Confidently
Many Salesforce Admin jobs list 1–2 years of experience as preferred, not required. Apply anyway if you have the certification, hands-on org experience, and can speak confidently about configuration, automation, and security. Prepare for scenario-based interview questions using A2Z Salesforce's free interview Q&A pages.
